CULTURE | The Kaleidoscope concert series continue

CULTURE | The Kaleidoscope concert series continued at Druid City Music Hall as Evan Honer took the stage Thursday with special guests Eli Winders and Liam St. John for a night filled with American folk and blues-inspired music.

Honer, most known for his cover of Tyler Childers’ deep cut “Jersey Giant,” started his career in southern California as he built a social media following by blending genres such as acoustic folk, indie Americana and alternative pop.

“Jersey Giant is my favorite song,” said Sienna Kasper, a freshman in the crowd. “That’s the song I’m most excited to hear.”

NEWS | The electric scooter-sharing company Veo is about to enter its fourth year on campus, and its mark can be seen on nearly every road and by nearly every building.

With a campus spanning 1,400 acres, getting to class can be a challenge, and The University of Alabama has been trying to find solutions for those unwilling or unable to bike and drive to get around. Traditional public transportation like busing has been around the University for decades, but the Crimson Ride bus system has received criticism for faulty apps, timeliness, overcrowding and labor rights. Many metro transit providers around the country have similarly fallen under fire for inadequate bus systems.

Enter Veo, alongside competitors like Bird and Lime, and its solution to the public transit predicament: micromobility. Instead of relying on huge apparatuses like buses, trains and cars, micromobility centers around smaller devices like scooters and minibikes.

SPORTS | Alabama secured a 52-7 win over Mercer Saturday, giving fans a clearer look at the team’s future playmakers.

Despite being in a scoring drought for the past two games and not making any scoring plays since Alabama’s game against Tennessee on Oct. 19, wide receiver Ryan Williams showed up against the Bears, earning two touchdowns.

“I’ve been challenging him to be a leader,” head coach Kalen DeBoer said. “Obviously, we’re looking at him as a guy who is going to be one of our playmakers. … He just has a maturity that’s well beyond his years.”

SPORTS | Alabama basketball is reaching heights it

SPORTS | Alabama basketball is reaching heights it has never seen before. Yet even with the program’s individual triumphs, leveraging UA football’s success is still a recruiting tactic for head basketball coach Nate Oats when attempting to get players to Tuscaloosa.

With a national powerhouse football team spearheaded by new head coach Kalen DeBoer and backed by legendary former head coach Nick Saban, Oats has used the football team to his advantage when bringing recruits on visits.

The Crimson Tide has hosted several basketball recruits at football games this season, including the No. 1 player in the nation in the class of 2025, 5-star small forward AJ Dybantsa.

Dybantsa was in town for the game against Georgia earlier this season, marking his first official visit to Alabama.

“It was good to watch the Alabama-Georgia game in football. Crazy environment,” Dybantsa said. “And there was a lot of support from Bama fans.”

NEWS | Black students reported receiving anonymous

NEWS | Black students reported receiving anonymous racist text messages last week with language referencing slavery; for some, however, this is not the first encounter with racism at the University, which has not publicly addressed the texts.

While those text messages were part of a larger nationwide trend, Black UA students have encountered racism both before and after the general election last Tuesday.

When freshman marketing major Alyse McCall received these text messages, part of her felt like the messages could be legitimate threats from someone local.

“A lot of the kids here are kind of crazy sometimes when it comes to politics or [when they’re] just out on the street talking about people that are another race or what they represent,” McCall said.

International students came together to celebrate and learn more about other cultures as well as show off their own.

NEWS | For years, Veterans Day at the University o

NEWS | For years, Veterans Day at the University of Alabama has come and gone, but this November, the Student Government Association is set to make it memorable.

From Nov. 11-14, the SGA will be on the Quad from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., inviting students to honor veterans through activities like signing a commemorative wall and writing letters to retired service members.

“Salute to Service” is the brainchild of Finley Ryan Richardson, director of the First Year Council. She envisions this not as a one-time event, but as a pledge that the sacrifices of veterans will be recognized and celebrated on campus.

SPORTS | The Crimson Tide will be geaux-ing back to Tuscaloosa having survived its time in Death Valley 42-13 Saturday and staving off playoff elimination.

While quarterback Jalen Milroe has struggled for much of this season, facing rumors of injury after multiple lackluster performances, the once-Heisman contender showed the college football world that Alabama’s season is not over.

“Forgive, never forget,” Milroe said. “I think that’s something that we do with a football team. You’re gonna have losses. You’re gonna have wins, and all of your losses turn into a lesson, right? ... They’re a tough team, offensively, defensively.”

NEWS | The FBI began looking into the racist text

NEWS | The FBI began looking into the racist text messages young Black Americans across the country — including at The University of Alabama — received yesterday, the bureau announced in a statement Thursday, as local authorities also acknowledged receiving reports.

The text messages each varied slightly in form but asked individuals to prepare to pick cotton on a plantation. Some people reportedly received versions of the message that included the recipient’s name.

Some versions made specific references to President-elect Donald Trump, purporting to be from “A Trump supporter,” according to USA Today.

The FBI released a statement Thursday saying it is aware of the messages and that it is in contact with the Justice Department and other federal authorities on the matter.

The Tuscaloosa Police Department received a report filed yesterday by someone who had received the text messages, department spokesperson Stephanie Taylor said in a text message. She added that the department believes the messages were sent through a spoof website but that officers are investigating to see if the source can be determined.

It remains unclear who sent the messages, which were reported across the country, from South Carolina to Pennsylvania and other states.

It also remains unclear how many students received these messages, how the sender was seemingly able to determine the students’ race and if UA students of other races received the texts.
