The Alabama women’s golf team earned a sixth-place finish out of 18 teams in the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, North Carolina on Sunday, in its last of four tournaments during the fall semester.
No. 1 Alabama was in a tie for fourth place after an opening 293 (5-over-par), nine strokes off No. 24 Oklahoma’s lead. An 8-over-par 296 score after Saturday’s second round dropped the Crimson Tide to a tie for seventh place, 17 strokes behind No. 13 Wake Forest entering the final round.
On Sunday, the team shot its best round of the tournament, a 4-over par 292 that lifted it into sixth place. Alabama’s total of 881 left it 22 strokes behind South Carolina and Wake Forest (859), which were tied for first place after 54 holes. Furman (866), Purdue (872), and Oklahoma (877) rounded out the top five.
Sophomore Cheyenne Knight, ranked No. 3 in the country, earned her fourth top-10 finish in as many tournaments this fall. Her score of 211 (70-70-71), 5-under-par, resulted in a tie for third place, only four strokes behind Wake Forest’s Jennifer Kupcho.
Sophomore Lauren Stephenson, ranked No. 7 nationwide, finished in a tie for 11th at 1-under par 215 (71-73-71). Freshman Kristen Gillman bookended a Saturday 76 with two 72s, for a total of 4-over-par 220 and a T24 finish. Seniors Mia Landegren and Cammie Gray posted scores of 236 and 240, respectively, to finish T80 and 90th.
The Crimson Tide’s next tournament will be the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge in Palos Verdes Estates, California, from Feb. 12-14, 2017.
