The No. 28 Alabama women’s tennis team had a strong start at the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic in Montgomery, Alabama on Friday afternoon, posting a 4-0 sweep over Princeton.
The match started unfavorably for the Crimson Tide, as it trailed in all three doubles matches. However, the team rallied to win the point. Senior Natalia Maynetto and junior Joanna Nena Savva came back from being down 2-3 to win 6-3, and the No. 20 doubles pair in the nation of freshman Andie Daniell and junior Erin Routliffe also earned a 6-3 win to give Alabama the point.
The Crimson Tide started singles off hot, winning five of the six first sets. It took some time before a match would be completed, with Routliffe finishing first with a 6-4, 7-5 win to earn Alabama’s second point. Maynetto was next, earning the team another point with a 7-6, 6-1 win. Then, it was sophomore Aryn Greene who delivered the decisive fourth point.
After losing 2-6 in her opening set, Greene rallied back to win her next two sets 6-4, 6-3, giving Alabama the overall victory.
Daniell and junior Danielle Spielmann were leading 4-1 in their third sets, and Savva was tied 4-4 in her third set when play ended.
The team will be back in action on Saturday at 10 a.m. against an opponent that has yet to be determined.
