Position Grades
Quarterbacks: A+
AJ McCarron was nearly perfect against Georgia State, throwing one incompletion and four touchdown passes. Blake Sims replaced McCarron in the second half and threw for 130 yards and one touchdown on 14-of-18 passing.
Running backs: B+
Alabama rushed for 181 yards, with five players seeing at least four touches. T.J. Yeldon led the group with only 51 yards. With several players sharing the ball, no one emerged with a dominant rushing performance.
Wide receivers: A+
15 different Crimson Tide receivers caught a pass Saturday, with five different players scoring touchdowns. Alabama flexed its guns and showed just how deep it is at the wide receiver position.
Offensive line: A
The offensive line paved the way for 477 yards of total offense and did not give up a sack on the afternoon. In the running game, Alabama averaged six yards per carry, and the big guys up front had a lot to do with that.
Defensive line: A
The defensive line stuffed the line of scrimmage and held the Panthers to 15 rushing yards on 22 attempts. It kept Georgia State quarterback Ronnie Bell in the pocket and forced the Panthers to make plays through the air instead of on the ground.
Linebackers: A
Led by C.J. Mosley, the linebackers did a solid job in stopping the run and the pass. Xzavier Dickson recorded the only sack of the day, and the entire linebacking unit accounted for 4.5 tackles for loss.
Secondary: B+
The secondary held up well without its leader, Ha Ha Clinton-Dix. Georgia State was able to throw for 160 yards on Alabama, which isn’t a lot. But the Crimson Tide failed to intercept a single pass.
Special teams: B
Georgia State kicked away from Christion Jones, which was a wise decision on its part, and Cody Mandell only punted the ball one time. Adam Griffith missed a 30-yard field goal in the fourth quarter, and the special teams unit finished the day mediocre at best.
