On Thursday, a board of trustees committee approved contract extensions and pay increases for some football coaches.
For this upcoming season and the season after that, head coach Nick Saban will receive over $5 million in benefits. Then, from 2012- 2017, he’ll earn over $5.5 million in benefits.
He will earn these benefits in September of the current year earned, but he won’t receive them until February of the following year.
This replaces his earlier contract amendment, which provided him with three contract year completion bonuses totaling more than $5 million over the course of the term. With this amendment, the total should remain the same over the term of his contract.
Other coaches who received a raise included offensive line coach Joe Pendry, outside linebackers coach Sal Sunseri, offensive coordinator Jim McElwain, special teams/tight ends coach Bobby Williams, running backs coach Burton Burns, wide receiver coach Curt Cignetti, defensive line coach Bo Davis, strength and conditioning coach Scott Cochran and director of player development Carl Martin.
Pendry, McElwain, Williams and Cochran all received term extensions until February 2012, and each got a raise of different amounts.
Of all the pay raises among assistant coaches, Pendry will be earning the most, with a $425,000 base salary over the next year and then another increase to $450,000 in 2011-12. After him is McElwain, who will earn a $410,000 base salary from 2010-12.
Sunseri, the linebacker coach, also earned a salary increase.
Burns, Cignetti, Davis and Martin all received term extensions to February 2012.
