Hunter Whitley always wanted to be a Marine.

After Whitley was honorably discharged in July 2022, he returned to Alabama and sought outpatient mental health treatment from the Veterans Affairs Tuscaloosa Healthcare System while attending the University, receiving most of his treatment from the Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center.

Months later, in November 2022, Whitley — whom family described as a man with many passions, including music and art, and the type of person who cared about everyone — died by suicide.

In September 2024, the VA Office of Inspector General, which provides independent oversight of VA, published a 53-page report detailing failures in Whitley’s treatment.

“I struggled for almost two years just trying to come to terms with Hunter wanted to die, and I need to be okay with it, because that’s what Hunter wanted, and Hunter usually got what Hunter wanted,” said Shannon McDaniel, Whitley’s mother. But the OIG report, which came about after she filed a complaint, “changed everything.”

The report found that guidelines set by the Veterans Health Administration — the VA healthcare system — were not followed during Whitley’s treatment. According to the report, staff failed to do the following: adequately assess his suicide risk, address his reported access to a firearm, and provide appropriate education and oversight regarding potential adverse effects of an antidepressant he was prescribed, among other mistakes.

Some of the mistakes in Whitley’s care reflect broader problems with VA healthcare that have been documented in other OIG reports, and his story in several ways mirrors that of two other veterans who died by suicide: Connor Brumfield and Tyler Everett.

Editor applications are now open for the 2025-2026 school year.

Applications are due by 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, April 6. Interviews will be conducted in-person at the Office of Student Media located at Riverside Commons between April 7 and April 11. Applicants will be notified of their status by April 14.

These are paid positions. All editors are expected to be available after 5 p.m. on Sundays and Wednesdays to prepare content for our email newsletter that goes out on Monday and Thursday mornings. Exceptions can be made for conflicts with class.

NEWS | Six progressive organizations gathered on the Quad Thursday to protest the University’s recent granting of an exception to a required nondiscrimination clause in student organization constitutions.

The exception, granted to conservative student organization Young Americans for Freedom after the group pushed back against the required statement in an email to University President Stuart Bell, omitted the terms “gender identity,” “gender expression” and “sexual identity” from a list of protected characteristics in the clause. The exception still included that membership was open to all UA students.

Travis Jackson, a member of the board of directors for Alabama Equality, was given first billing on the announcement for the protest.

“I want them to retract removing those three expressions because what they don’t understand is that when they remove those wordings, they put fear and discomfort into our community,” Jackson said.

UPDATE | New details have emerged about U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s arrest of doctoral student Alireza Doroudi.

— Yesterday, a University spokesperson confirmed that a doctoral student was arrested by federal immigration authorities, without providing the student’s name, declining to share specific information due to federal privacy laws.

“International students studying at the University are valued members of the campus community, and International Student and Scholar Services is available to assist international students who have questions,” said Alex House, associate director of media relations for the University. “UA has and will continue to follow all immigration laws and cooperate with federal authorities.”

— An employee at the Pickens County Jail confirmed that Doroudi is being held there, adding that the facility typically sends ICE detainees to a detention facility in Louisiana.

— The Department of Homeland Security provided a statement about Doroudi’s arrest:
“ICE HSI [Homeland Security Investigations] made this arrest in accordance with the State Department’s revocation of Doroudi’s student visa. This individual posed significant national security concerns,” a DHS spokesperson said. The statement did not provide details about why it claimed Doroudi posed national security concerns.

— Students for Justice in Palestine at UA, formerly known as Bama Students for Palestine, said in a statement on social media Thursday that it was “outraged” to learn of his detainment and that he "was not involved, nor has he ever been involved in any organizing or protests related to our organization."

BREAKING | A UA student was reportedly detained by the U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement early Tuesday morning.

Alireza Doroudi, a doctoral student from Iran studying mechanical engineering, was reportedly arrested by ICE officers at around 5 a.m. at his home on Tuesday.

At the time of publication, an Iranian person with the name “Alireza Doroudi” was listed on the ICE website with the status of “In ICE custody.” A detention facility was not listed. It is unclear at this time where he is being detained.

This is a breaking news story and will continue to be updated.

NEWS | President Donald Trump issued an executive

NEWS | President Donald Trump issued an executive order last Thursday that directs the education secretary to begin dismantling the department. The department’s dissolution was a key campaign promise of Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign.

“The Department of Education burdens schools with regulations and paperwork,” the order said. “Its ‘Dear Colleague’ letters have forced schools to redirect resources toward complying with ideological initiatives, which diverts staff time and attention away from schools’ primary role of teaching.”

Cierra Gilliam, a senior majoring in news media, said that she believes that the department’s dismantling is a reflection of the state of the country.

“With it being not even 50 years old, it says a lot about how quickly we can go back to living in the dark times of our past,” she said. “They are trying to divide us and slowly but surely limit our education so that they can have as many people as possible naive and drinking the Kool-Aid of oppression that they are dishing out."

The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees appointed Sid J. Trant as chancellor of the UA System Friday. Trant has served as interim chancellor for the past 10 months, after the retirement of former chancellor Finis St. John.
