Andie Daniell, a member of the Alabama women’s tennis team, had a win and a loss in two qualifying matches at Riviera Tennis Club on Tuesday, attempting to qualify for the singles main draw of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, California.
Daniell, ranked No. 33 in the country, was seeded sixth in the qualifying draw of 64 competitors and defeated her first opponent, No. 62 Denise Starr from California, handily by the score of 6-3, 7-5. In the second round, No. 110 Nuria Oremno Ruiz, out of Colorado, upset Daniell, 6-4, 6-3, to end her qualifying bid.
Daniell and her Alabama doubles partner, Erin Routlffe, who together are ranked No. 34 in the country, are already entered in the doubles main draw and did not have to qualify. Routliffe is also entered in the singles main draw and did not have to compete against Daniell in the singles qualifying. Brackets for both singles and doubles main draws have yet to be announced.
