The renovated Sewell-Thomas stadium is finally complete after $42.6 million was put towards renovations. Before the season begins, the Alabama baseball program decided to invite alumni of the team and program for a scrimmage between current and former players. The game will take place on Saturday around noon.
“We are expecting from George Howell from the 1950’s who is 89 years old to Mikey White, who just finished last year and all in-between,” coach Gaspard said. “There’s over 200 alumni [coming]. There’s a “who’s who?” list. They are all super excited, and we are really looking forward for those guys to reconnect with each other and the program as well.”
Two current big leaguers Mike Avila and Tommy Hunter will be in attendance along with many other former pro players. Gaspard said that the stadium and atmosphere is bringing everyone back. He said that he texted Hunter Wednesday and he made plans on six-hour notice to make it on Saturday.
“We fell like that’s one thing the stadium is going to allow us to do, is kind of bring that family back together again and get everybody back as one,” Gaspard said.
The schedule for Saturday (all open to public):
- 10:00-11:45 a.m. batting practice for all alumni
- 11:00-1:00 p.m. stadium tours for fans
- 12:00-12:30 p.m. first pitch will be thrown
