The Crimson Tide men’s tennis team had a successful first road trip of the season, picking up wins against North Florida and Miami in the North Florida Invite in Jacksonville, Florida. The two victories move the team to 5-1 so far on the year. The Crimson Tide played both matches on Friday night, and had a Saturday match against UNC Wilmington cancelled due to inclement weather.
Head Coach George Husack was thrilled with his team’s performance.
“Super effort today by the Tide,” Husack said. “They were gritty, resilient and played with tremendous conviction. It could’ve been real easy to lay blame on the rough weather and outdoor elements but the guys were focused and battled all the way through.”
The day started with a 4-1 victory against Miami in singles only play. Miami’s Jesse Flores took the first point of the day by defeating sophomore Grayson Goldin 6-0, 6-2. The Crimson Tide earned its first point with a win from sophomore Korey Lovett 6-2, 6-4. Becker O’Shaughnessey gave Alabama a lead with a comeback 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory. From there, freshman Spencer Richey won 6-2, 6-4, and freshman Mazen Osama clinched it for Alabama with a 1-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4) win.
In the second match of the day, Alabama faced North Florida and earned a 4-2 win, once again only playing singles matches. North Florida earned the first point with Jack Findel-Hawkins defeating Lovett 6-3, 6-3. Osama earned Alabama’s first point with a 6-1, 7-5 win. North Florida answered with Jonathan Deautriell’s 6-3, 6-4 win over Richey. Alabama wouldn’t lose another match, with O’Shaughnessey winning 7-5, 6-1, and Goldin clinching the win by triumphing 7-6, 1-6, 6-4.
