Avery Johnson did not start conference play the way he hoped on Thursday night.

Alabama’s players were forced to listen to Ole Miss fans chant “Just like football” in the final minutes of the Rebels 74-66 victory over the Crimson Tide in Oxford, Mississippi.

Alabama held a 40-32 lead at the half, but the Crimson Tide fell behind the Rebels who shot 14-28 from the field in the second half. Alabama’s lead was also hurt by turnovers. The Crimson Tide turned the ball over 12 times in the second half after only turning it over seven times in the first.

The Crimson Tide got off to a slow start and actually trailed by as much as 10 points at one point in the first half. Alabama outrebounded Ole Miss 10-2 in the final 7:15 of the first half, and used a 20-5 run over the same time period to take its first lead of the game.

One bright spot for the Crimson Tide in second half, might have been the play of freshman Donta Hall. Hall, who averaged nearly 12 blocks per game in high school fouled out of Thursday’s game with four blocks in 8 total minutes on the court.

Retin Obasohan and Arthur Edwards led the team in scoring with 23 and 17 points respectively. Both players also happened to tie their career-highs in points scored. Michael Kessens also finished the game in double figures and led the team with seven rebounds.

A majority of Edwards points came from behind the arc, as he finished 5-6 on 3-point attempts. His teammates finished the game shooting 4-19 from the same distance.

Alabama now has less than 48 hours to put this loss behind it as the team prepares to host Kentucky on Saturday at 5 p.m.
