Following Saturday’s 43-37 loss to Ole Miss, Alabama coach Nick Saban addressed what he liked and what he didn’t during his weekly Monday press conference.

He liked the effort he saw from his players. The offense ran 101 plays Saturday.

“You’ve never been in that situation before so you never know how a team is going to respond, but I liked the resiliency that we showed,” Saban said. “We had the ball with 2:54 where we could have had a chance to put a drive together and threw a pick. I was pleased with the way the players responded in the game.”

Alabama was down by as much as 20 points Saturday but rallied twice to within six during the four-hour game, even when many fans left in the third quarter when it was 30-10.

“I was really happy with the fans,” Saban said. “I thought the fans really helped keep the players in the game by their energy and enthusiasm. I was really happy about it, to be honest with you.”

He was less pleased with his quarterbacks’ performances. Cooper Bateman, who started, and Jake Coker combined for 32-of-58 and threw three interceptions. Coker was also sacked.

Saban said the offense still hasn’t found its identity.

“I thought we had some identity in the first game and were moving in the right direction and then in the last two games, we’ve been scattered,” Saban said. “We need to have some certainty in what we’re going to do. Jake came into the game and played with some passion and showed great leadership and energy when he played. We still have things that we need to work on and improve.

“At this point, provided he does the things he’s supposed to do, I think we’ll start him in this game. But I still think that what I’m talking about applies to all positions, not only quarterback.”

Injury updates:

Saban said wide receiver Robert Foster is out for “a while” with a shoulder injury that requires surgery.

Cole Mazza is also out for “medical reasons.”
