Fresh off her NCAA Championship appearance, University of Alabama swimmer Kristel Vourna has earned a spot on the Greek 2011 World Championship team.
The spot was earned after Vourna set a new Greek record in the 100-meter butterfly. Vourna’s time of 58.39 at the Banja Luka Open ranks her 14th in the world at the event. Along with a spot on the 2011 Championship team, the extraordinary performance earned her a spot on the 2012 Greek Olympic squad.
Earlier this season, Vourna was placed on the Southeastern Conference All-Freshman team. At the SEC Championships, she finished fourth while setting a school record of 52.19 in the event. Vourna also ranks third all-time in the 50-meter and fourth in the 100-meter freestyle at Alabama.
Vourna will now travel to Shanghai, China for the World Championships from July 24 through the 31.
