Mayor’s Cup 5K proceeds to go to Pre-K Initiative

The fifth annual Mayor’s Cup 5K race is set to take place April 30. The race will begin and end at the new Tuscaloosa Amphitheater. Registration for the race is open for all interested participants, and the cost to participate is $15 if postmarked today. Otherwise, the cost is $20.

“This run/walk is a family friendly event. Participants are from all age groups with the desire to supplement their health and wellness goals and contribute to a great cause,” Sedell Bullard, human resources associate director, said in an emailed statement.

All proceeds from the Mayor’s Cup will go toward the Tuscaloosa Pre-K Initiative.

This is a very exciting time as we plan and prepare for our fifth annual Mayor’s Cup with all proceeds benefiting Tuscaloosa Pre-K Initiative,” Bullard said. “This vital program targets academically at-risk 4-year-olds in Tuscaloosa and provides them with one year of classroom training with a certified teacher before entering kindergarten, with the intention of getting them back on grade level by the time they leave kindergarten. Every dollar spent on Pre-K saves taxpayers up to $7 by reducing the need for remedial and special education.”

Tuscaloosa Track Club is partnering with the city of Tuscaloosa to formulate the event. TTC is an organization composed of athletes including runners.

The first 500 registrants will receive a T-shirt. Awards will go to the top female and male participants, grandmaster participants and master participants. There will be a first, second and third place winner for each age group. Door prizes will be awarded after the race as well. After the race, Bullard said two local bands will perform.

Bullard said there are hopes to have more participants than last year and have more participation from various sources.

“Our wish is to exceed the amount of 1,036 registered last year and to get maximum participation for our schools, college and universities,” he stated. “Hopefully, we will continue raising the awareness of the need and funding for Pre-K.”

The race will begin at 8 a.m. with registration being from 7-7:45 a.m. The awards presentation will be at 10 a.m.
