Alex Ash Freshman, Pre-Med Running for Senator of the College of Arts and Sciences Experience: Whether it was from participating in a community service project, or simply talking to fellow students, I have been involved since I stepped on the UA campus and this is another way I felt I could make a positive difference. Elizabeth (Kirkland) Back

Freshman, English
Running for Senator of the College of Arts and Sciences
Experience: This past year I had the pleasure of serving on the First Year Council as the Chairman of Academic Affairs, and as a member of the Community Service Board, have big plans for the campus for the spring!
Goals: If elected, I want to increase student accessibility to the Student Government Association, encourage the implementation of creative student movements throughout the Capstone, and provide a fresh, new voice for the College of Arts and Sciences in the Senate.

Austin Barranco

Freshman, Studio Art and Business

Running for Senator of the College of Arts & Sciences

Experience: I feel that I am qualified to represent the College of Arts & Sciences as a senator because of my prior involvement in SGA, the Alabama Youth Legislative Convention, as well as my representation of the Alabama Forensic Council.

Goals: As a senator, my focus will be on many of the problems that the University faces today; however, much of this focus will be directed toward improving the parking situation and the public transportation system.

Elliott Bell

Freshman, History

Running for Senator of the College of Arts and Sciences Experience: I currently serve as V.P. of the Ridgecrest South Housing Council, I am a member of the University Singers, and I have worked to expand outreach beyond the borders of campus.

Goals: As a senator I will work to inspire the students of the University, for I feel that we can always better as a community, and I will always be available, allowing for their voices to be heard and their visions to be realized.

Matt Berryman Freshman, Finance Running for Senator of the College of Commerce and Business Administration Experience: I have overseen scholarship policies in various campus organizations. Michael Bolus

Freshman, Chemical Engineering

Running for Senator of the College of Engineering

Experience: As the vice president of my high school’s student body last year, I was in charge of orchestrating the preparation for and running of our Homecoming Week events, so I know how critical organization, deadlines, and communication between team members are for student government.

Goals: As senator, I would like to work toward fixing problems such as fickle internet signal on parts of campus, but more generally, I would like the opportunity to serve the interests of my fellow students as issues arise on a day-to-day basis.

John Brinkerhoff

Freshman, Political Science

Running for Senator of the College of Arts and Sciences

Experience: This past year, I have been able to serve the freshman class as the Financial Affairs Committee Chair on the First Year Council and as a columnist for the Crimson White.

Goals: As a senator, I would work to connect the individual needs of student organizations to the SGA’s potential by improving communication and reforming the Financial Affairs Committee process, continue to give a voice to students in University regulation and enforcement policies by revising the code of student conduct for ticket and alcohol violations, and finally, enhance the college experience for the entire student body by improving the campus Wi-Fi and reevaluating the Crimson Ride bus routes.

Abby Grace Brown

Sophomore, Public Relations

Running for Senator of the College of Communications and Information Sciences

Experience: Over the past year, I have been involved in SGA activities, such as committees and events, and now I feel that I am ready to take the next step to serve in the Senate.

Goals: As a Senator, I would like to take this leadership opportunity to better both the College of Communications and Information Sciences and the Capstone as a whole by listening to the ideas and concerns of the entire student body and implement those ideas into actions, which benefit us all.

Senate assistant for Alan Rose this year. Goals: As a senator I would like to voice the opinion of the student body, to enable them to get what they really want out of the University.

Bryant “Bo” Evans

Sophomore, Marketing and Finance Running for Senator for the College of Commerce and Business Administration

Experience: I was an SGA Representative for my Senior class at Prattville High School and I now serve as Treasurer for Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity.

Goals: As C&BA Senator I will do my best to represent the students in the College of Business and at The University of Alabama in working for better parking areas, lowering parking citations, and more student seating at sporting events.

Carly Evans Sophomore, Nursing Running for Senator of the College of Nursing Experience: I currently serve as an ambassador for the College of Nursing, which has given me an opportunity to expose myself to the different facets of the college and develop an understanding of the needs of nursing students. Goals: As a senator, I want to make sure that the needs of the nursing are not overlooked in the SGA while serving as a voice for the concerns of both the faculty and the students; specifically the needs for better parking and dining options. Swinton A. Griffith

Running for Senator of the College of Arts and Sciences Experience: I currently serve on the Board of Directors of a 501c(3) entity responsible for building schools in impoverished areas of Eastern Africa and am the Operations Director of the Bisate Building Project in Rwanda.

Goals: I want to be an advocate for students in A&S and work towards building a more inclusive student body that celebrates our unique and diverse backgrounds and respects all students at UA.

 

Carley Hallman

Freshman, Nursing

Running for Senator of the College of Nursing

Experience: I am currently serving on Freshman Forum, and my senior year I represented our high school as Miss Arab High School, Senior Class Vice President, Student Council Secretary, and Miss HOSA (Health Occupational Students of America).

Goals: If elected as Senator, I want to represent the College of Nursing to the best of my ability and lead my fellow students to great success along with bringing the students together through the passion they share for what they are working towards.

 

Lauren Hardison

Freshman, Finance, Swahili Minor, Global Business Specialization

Running for Senator of the College of Commerce & Business Administration

Experience: I am a member of the Honors College and am a University Fellow, serve on SGA First Year Council and as the Executive Secretary of Forza Financial Inc., and am a Student Instructor for The THINK Program (non-profit) and a member of the Honors College Assembly.

Goals: I will create and pass legislation most beneficial to Alabama’s high-achieving business students, seek to establish a safe bond with both the SGA and C&BA, and serve to promote the needs of both the college and its students in an ethical way.

Reid Harvey

Freshman, Biology

Running for Senator of the College of Arts and Sciences

Experience: I am risk management chair in my fraternity, and as a freshman, being a member of the Senate will not only kick off my leadership roles at the University but also begin my involvement in the SGA.

Goals: One thing I will do if elected Senate of the College of Arts and Sciences will be to push for the fine-tuning of ten Hoor Hall such as fixing air conditioners and providing benches.

 

Nicole Hood

Junior, Social Work

Running for Senator of the School of Social Work

Experience: My involvement in philanthropy events and community service projects that have helped better the campus has made me want to be more involved in the way the campus works and is run.

Goals: I wish to be a senator so that I can represent the School of Social Work while advocating for the best resources and programs available to the student body as a whole.

 

Fred Horn

Freshman, Accounting and Public Relations Running for Senator of  the College of Commerce and Business Administration

Experience: I have been working 25 hours per week consistently for a year in the Bruno Business Library, I am an orientation leader for the university, and I am Financial chairperson of NAACP.

Goals: I would like to heavily focus on increasing Financial Affairs Committee funding for students, and allocating those funds to scholarships, student resources, and student organizations;furthermore, heavily focusing on the first year experience by providing more personal advising to incoming students.

Sean L. Hudson

Experience: Served as a clerk for the Student Judiciary Board for the Judicial Branch of SGA and an adviser for the State Youth Advisory Council for the Department of Human Resources Jefferson County Region

Goals: Increase the involvement of the School of Social Work by providing more opportunities for the students and to increase a partnership with the Student Government Association (SGA) and the School of Social Work.

 

Rachael Hughes

Experience: I served as a Senate Assistant for the 2010-2011 school year.

Goals: As a senator, I want to serve the College of Engineering students with integrity, a strong voice, and their best interest in mind.

Experience: In high school, I worked along with my student government to make sure that there were no biased opinions and that everyone had their voices heard.

Experience: Since I have been a student at the University of Alabama, I have had the opportunity to be involved in Freshman Forum, Moral Forum, and IFC Judicial Board, clearly demonstrating my interest in giving my time back to the University and the student body.

Goals: If I am fortunate enough to be elected as a senator for the College of Arts and Sciences, I will work diligently and participate proactively for issues facing the students of the college while at the same time researching each and every article of proposed legislation and how that will impact the school and the students.

Experience: I represent the residents of my residence hall as a Blount Hall senator in the Residence Hall Association and I was elected as the 2010-11 Track 2 co-chair of Freshman Forum where I have had the opportunity to lead meetings, interact with other student leaders on campus and discuss topics that will help our members grow as individuals, leaders on campus and leaders in our community.

Goals: I want to listen to the concerns of students and student organizations and address those concerns by providing efficient, assertive and dedicated representation to move the College of Arts & Sciences forward and provide better resources to foster student success.

Mary Sellers Shaw Freshman, English Running for Senator of the College of Arts and Sciences Experience: I am currently President Pro Tempore of SGA’s First Year Council; through this I have had the opportunity to increase communication and involvement on campus through organizing the First Year Tailgate, working to redesign the Freshman Website, leading the development of an SGA project database, and many other projects. Goals: I want to increase SGA communication with student publications and to set up school-wide information meetings where students can find out about our progress as well as make suggestions for future plans. Goals: As a graduate student, my goal is to focus the senate to become a more inclusive and diverse body of students and to represent the voices of students all over campus.

Goals: As a Senator, I would like to focus my actions on the academic side by researching the basic engineering courses whose class credit to hour ratios have recieved much complaints.

Experience: I have been involved in many campus activities in the past including College Republicans, serving as an SGA Judicial Board Associate Justice, and am a fellow in the Blackburn Institute.

Goals: I hope to bring the perspective of having experience as both an undergrad and graduate student here at the University to discussions about how to better campus life for the entire campus community.

 

James Taylor

Experience: I am currently a member of the First Year Council where I have gained invaluable experience working with various parts of the Student Government Association.

Goals: As senator, I will resume my efforts from First Year Council to obtain a better connection between the university’s student body and student government.

Experience: I have served as a senator for one year, previously been on two SGA committees, and in numerous housing student leadership positions in RHA and in community.

Goals: If reelected, I want to continue to work to improve relations between the SGA and all students, as well as continue to make information more clear and to give more concern and voice to the needs of the graduate students, as well as all students, that attend the university.

Experience: This past year I have gained SGA experience as a member of both First Year Council and Ideas to Action.

Goals: If elected, it would be my goal to work towards creating the best educational setting for every student by improving the campus wireless network, refining the bamacash/ dining dollars system, and encouraging initiatives that foster campus unity and diversity.

 

Davis Vaughn

Experience: Over the past years, I have had the privilege of serving my fellow freshmen as Secretary of First Year Council, providing me with valuable experience in service, leadership, and the development of a solid work ethic.

Goals: As a Senator for the C & IS College, I would like to develop a 24-hour study room for C & IS majors, enhance the technology with more computers and printers in Reese Phifer, develop a plan to build a student lounge in the soon to be vacant 1st floor of Reese Phifer, enhance scholarship opportunities and financial aid benefits, and any other suggestions that my potential constituents may have.
