Renowned author Margaret Atwood is coming to The University of Alabama to read from her works and talk to students. The author of novels such as The Handmaid’s Tale, The Blind Assassin, Oryx and Crake, as well as many others, she has also written more than fifty volumes of poetry, children’s literature, fiction and non-fiction.

When: Tuesday, Nov. 14 from 7-8 p.m.

Where: Bama Theater, downtown Tuscaloosa. 

Why: “It’s exciting for the campus and for our department, but I think it’ also exciting for the city as a whole,” said Kevin Waltman, the assistant director of creative writing at The University of Alabama. 

He went on to say that Atwood is an author who has both critical and popular appeal, and one of the few who can fill the Bama Theater. He said that she has an important presence culturally, outside of just her books, and that is what makes her visit to the University so exciting.

“It’s a chance for students to hear her talk about the writing process, as well as the role of literature in culture and politics,” Waltman said. 

After the event, Atwood will be doing a book signing in the Bama Theater for those in attendance. Her books, such as the Handmaid’s Tale, Hag-Seed, The Heart Goes Last and others will be available for signing.
