In the second week of a drought, the Birmingham Water Works has begun to limit the outdoor water usage of Birmingham residents.
Under the system, addresses ending with an even number can water on Mondays and Thursdays, while those ending in an odd number can water on Tuesdays and Fridays. On these days, watering is only allowed from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. No outdoor watering is allowed on any other day.
“If a reduction in water usage does not happen soon, the BWW will activate the stage three drought warning phase of our drought management plan, which imposes surcharges for above normal water use for residential and commercial customers,” said Darryl Jones, assistant general manager of Operations and Technical Services, to AL.com.
The Water Works defines above normal water usage, the point at which surcharges would be incurred to the user, to be 10 percent above average.
With no rain forecasted in the coming week, the Water Works plans to enact a stage-three-drought warning on Monday.
