This week, the University will host an event to promote STEM studies to local high school students. STEAM Sports Group and Honda will co-sponsor the event, which will highlight the role STEM plays in the automotive and motorsports industries. The event is also the result of a partnership with a University student design team, Formula SAE.

WHO: The University of Alabama and engineering design team Formula SAE

WHAT: The event is designed to encourage people of all backgrounds to study the STEM fields.

Students will begin their day touring different exhibits, after which they will watch a demonstration of Honda’s Indy car. Students will then head to the Ferg theater, where they will watch a Ted talk and have lunch. Afterwards, students will get autographs from the driver of the Indy car and go on a tour of the remaining University student projects.

WHEN: Wednesday, April 19 from 9 a.m. – 1:40 p.m.

WHERE: The University campus and downtown Tuscaloosa

WHY: “STEAM Sports Group contacted our student design team, Formula SAE, about hosting an event at The University of Alabama,” said Zachary Hagan, a junior mechanical engineer student and a member of the Formula SAE team. “We’ve worked with them to coordinate with all the different parties to organize the event. We’ll have several student team, such as the Formula SAE and Astrobotics teams, on display as well as an Indy car from Honda’s race team, Andretti Autosports.”

Hagan said the Formula SAE team will cap off the day with an unveiling of our new car that we will compete with this May at our annual competition in Michigan.
