The Alabama women’s basketball team will travel to Fajardo, Puerto Rico to compete in the Puerto Rico Clasico over Thanksgiving. This tournament will run Nov. 22-26 and all games will be played at the Fajardo Arena.
The Crimson Tide is slated to face North Carolina State and Elon, which were a pair of NCAA tournament teams from a season ago.
“This is going to be a great opportunity for us to play two teams that finished with top 40 RPIs and both made the NCAA tournament,” head coach Kristy Curry said. “We know this will be a great early season challenge in a unique environment, and we are looking forward to that challenge.”
The NC State Wolfpack ended the 2016-17 season with a 23-9 record overall and a 12-4 mark in the Atlantic Coast Conference to earn a final ranking of No. 17 in the nation. Alabama and NC State will be meeting for the first time since 2011 and sixth time in the series. The Crimson Tide owns a slight advantage, with a 3-2 record; however, the Wolfpack came away victorious in the last meeting, winning 79-57.
The Elon Phoenix closed with a 27-7 overall record, winning the Colonial Athletic Association championship and making the program’s first appearance in the NCAA tournament. November’s matchup will be the second ever between Alabama and Elon. The Crimson Tide won the previous matchup by a score of 74-49 on Dec. 18, 1998 in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
Last season, Alabama finished with a 17-3 non-conference record.
