After a tough five-set loss to Tulsa on Friday night, the Alabama Crimson Tide volleyball team rebounded with a 3-1 victory over Incarnate Word to raise its record to 2-1 on the season. The match was the final one for the Crimson Tide in Tulsa, Oklahoma as part of the Hurricane Classic.

Alabama got off to a fast start, winning the first set 25-14. The second set was much closer, with a late 22-22 tie before the Crimson Tide came away with it 25-23. Incarnate Word avoided a three set sweep by getting an early 7-2 lead in the third set. Alabama closed it to 10-8 before the Cardinal closed the set on a 15-9 run to claim it 25-17.

In the fourth set, the Cardinal scored first before Alabama rattled off six unanswered points for a lead it would not relinquish. The Crimson Tide held a match point at 24-13, but the Cardinal scored seven straight points to keep its hopes alive. Finally, junior outside hitter Kat Hutson got a kill to win the set 25-20 and give the Crimson Tide the victory.

Redshirt senior middle blocker Krystal Rivers led the team in kills for the third straight match with 18, while senior outside hitter Brittany Thomas contributed 14 kills and Hutson added 12. Redshirt freshman setter Shannon Mikesky had 37 assists, and fell one dig shy of a third consecutive double-double, finishing with nine. Alabama had a .250 hitting percentage, which was comfortably higher than the Cardinal’s .168. Both teams had 21 errors.

The Crimson Tide returns to Tuscaloosa for its home opener on Tuesday, where it will host Samford University at 7 p.m. in Foster Auditorium.
