With the first day of class right around the corner, Alabama’s quarterback battle continued out on the field inside Bryant-Denny Stadium on Saturday as the Crimson Tide scrimmaged for the first time since fall camp started.

“I think it sort of gave us an idea who might be most ready to manage the team, but I think that decision is far from getting made,” coach Nick Saban said.

The only decision that seems to have been made since January is the elimination of David Cornwell from the competition due to a foot injury. Saban said everyone else got equal reps with the first team during the scrimmage.

Conditions weren’t ideal for the quarterbacks as rain poured down during the first part of the scrimmage, and running back Bo Scarbrough suffered an injury that limited his participation on the field. However, Saban said the offense improved later in the scrimmage when skies cleared up.

Saban said he felt like there were not many poor decisions he saw the quarterbacks make that seemed especially bad, but he’d still like to see all of the guys, especially true freshman Jalen Hurts and redshirt freshman Blake Barnett, improve in that area going forward.

“Jalen is a very talented guy and I thought he did some really good things out there today,” he said. “…I think the key for both younger guys is consistency in performance, taking care of the football and taking what the defense gives and being satisfied with that.”

None of the quarterbacks have done enough to win the job yet, but Saban does like how all three are approaching the competition.

“I think all three guys have done a good job of not looking over their shoulder in terms of what the other guy is doing, but trying to focus what they need to do to improve and get better,” Saban said.
