On Monday the UA Feminist Caucus and the Alabama Alliance for Sexual and Reproductive Justice hosted a Planned Parenthood Sexual Health Training.
The seminar took place in Lloyd Hall from 6-8 p.m. and was led by Katie Adams, a Health Educator of Planned Parenthood Southeast.
Adams began by quickly introducing herself and the Planned Parenthood organization, whose purposes, she said, include educational programs, health care and advocating for public policies.
Adams led the participants of the event through activities and discussions dealing with sexual hygiene and media literacy. Guests played a game to distinguish hygiene facts from myths, listened to popular songs and analyzed the lyrics, looked at advertisements to discuss subliminal messages, and more.
The objectification of women, definitions of consent and male dominance in society were some of the main issues discussed.
“It’s always good to have someone who can come from outside of our community and give us a little more education, especially when it’s something that they do for a living, so they’re really knowledgeable about it,” said Isabelle Beauregard of the Feminist Caucus.
The small turn-out for the seminar allowed for a more interactive and discussion based experience.
“Probably what I learned the most about was the hygiene,” said LaKendra Thomas, a junior who attended the event. She also said the discussion about advertisements stood out to her.
“Sex sells, and that’s what we see all the time, but I didn’t really put much thought into it until (Adams) pointed it out,” she said.
