As day three at the SEC Championships come to a close for the Crimson Tide, the men’s and women’s team look to regroup after an eventful Thursday in Missouri.
Alabama sophomore Mia Nonnenberg broke her own school record in the 400 individual medley. She dropped six seconds off of her previous record.
“It really just clicked,” Nonnenberg said. “I knew that I didn’t have anything to lose being in the B final, so I just went after it.”
The Alabama men’s team had its best showing in the 100-meter butterfly. The Crimson Tide swimmers were represented in the event by five different swimmers, led by Luke Kaliszak who posted a career-best 46.34 seconds. The sophomore said his success was motivated by his teammates on the sideline.
“Tonight was great,” he said. “I think the big difference was that I was in lane eight, right next to the team and they were cheering me on and I could hear it. Some of us, myself included, aren’t shaved and tapered, so we’re not feeling so hot, so to have a best swim is really exciting with NCAA [Championships] coming up.”
Sophomore Hannah Musser also posted a career-best 53.25 to take 11th in the women’s 100 butterfly while junior Caroline Korst took 16th with a 53.71 after posting a career-best 53.49 in preliminaries.
The men’s team is placed in fourth place in the SEC Championships through three days, while the women’s team has fallen to 11th place.
Alabama returns to action on Friday with the 200 butterfly, 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke, 400 medley and men’s platform diving.
