What: Hallowed Grounds, UA Campus Tour. Hilary Green, assistant professor in the Department of Gender and Race Studies, will be leading a one-hour walking tour called “Slavery and the University.” Green said the tour will show where slaves worked and slept, as well as commemorate those who died at the University.
Who: Participants will tour campus. The tour will make stops at Gorgas House, the President’s Mansion, Nott Hall and the slave cemetery. Buildings that are no longer here will be discussed as well.
“Some buildings aren’t there, but that doesn’t mean the footsteps aren’t,” Green said.

Wednesday, Feb. 3 at 10 a.m.*
Wednesday, Feb. 10 at 2 p.m.
Wednesday, Feb. 17 at 10 a.m.
Wednesday, Feb. 24 at 2 p.m.
*If there is inclement weather the tour will be moved to Friday, Feb. 5 at 2 p.m.
Where: The tour will start at the steps of Gorgas Library.
Why: “We have this rich history, but it’s in the landscape that we just take for granted,” Green said.
According to Green this tour works to illuminate that rich history using the sites that are still here, and it will give people the opportunity to walk through the world of people who are not usually talked about.
Additional Information: “Slavery and the University” is one of three Hallowed Grounds tours. The other two are “50thAnniversary of Autherine Lucy at UA” and “UA African American Heritage Tour.” Students, faculty, staff or community members who attend two of the three tours, as well as visiting one additional historical or cultural site, will become a UA Citizen Historian and have their name listed on the Crossroads Cultural Center Website.
