When Retin Obasohan’s final shot failed to hit its mark on Saturday, Alabama found itself on the wrong side of 72-70 decision against fellow SEC bubble team LSU.
Obasohan didn’t get the outcome he wanted, but that doesn’t mean he wasn’t pleased with what he saw last weekend.
“I’ve seen it all, I’ve seen a lot of people and then I’ve seen not a lot of people. Just to have the fans support us the way they are it means the world to myself,” Obasohan said. “It’s funny just warming up and just looking at the student section and it keeps going up and keeps going up, and you’re like wow.”
Obasohan said he has turned on his phone after games only to read apologetic text messages from his friends after they were turned away at the doors. The student section was at full capacity when they arrived.
Obasohan and his teammates will return to action on Tuesday night when the team hosts a Tennessee team that has scored less than 70 points once in 19 games. One of the main reasons Tennessee’s offense has been so consistent is the play of the Volunteers leading scorer, Kevin Punter Jr.
Punter has scored at least 23 points in Tennessee’s last three games. He led the Volunteers to victory over the then-No. 24 South Carolina Gamecocks on Saturday when he scored 36 points.
“He’s a little bit of a throwback because his mid-range game is pretty efficient,” coach Avery Johnson said. “You know, these days its either a 3 or a guy driving all the way to the basket, but his in-between game at 12 feet is pretty outstanding, and he gets his shot off, he has a great touch, he can drive both ways so its not like we can force him [one direction].”
