Ten years later, Patterson’s dream has become a long-time tradition at The University of Alabama. The Power of Pink event is one of the most popular events for many sports at Alabama. But it also means much more to those who get to put on the pink jersey.
Alabama soccer is one of the many programs honored to wear the pink jersey. This year’s Power of Pink match will be held Friday against Arkansas. Despite knowing it has to go out and compete for a win, coach Todd Bramble said the team is more excited to wear the uniform and represent the cause.
“I think all of us can really call on someone in our minds that has been affected by breast cancer,” Bramble said. “Whether that’s a family member or a family member of somebody on our team, so it’s an opportunity to wear pink uniforms to draw attention to that, which can help raise awareness and raise money. It’s something we’re always excited about doing on an
annual basis.”
Patterson’s dedication to the cause has helped bring in donations and support to those with breast cancer. The original gymnastics-only event became an athletic department cause four years ago. Though she resigned over the summer due to medical reasons, her belief is still going strong.
Bramble said this year’s Power of Pink event was very important to the team. A player, who wished to remain anonymous, is closely dealing with the fight. Her mother is currently battling breast cancer, so the team has been moved by this
year’s event.
The soccer team will be wearing all pink uniforms Friday night, not only for the player and her family but for the rest of the community preventing and battling breast cancer. Bramble said there is a different atmosphere in the stadium every time the team suits up in its pink uniforms and plays for
the fans.
“It’s a game our players always look forward to,” Bramble said. “It’s something unique. It has a different feel to it. The coaches are pink, the pre-game warm-up shirts are pink, and you get to put on a uniform that you only wear once a year. It just brings a special feeling to the game. Everyone is excited about it.”
Patterson’s dream will continue to live on throughout the rest of the year, as many other sports will host similar events. The Power of Pink soccer match against
Arkansas kicks off Friday at 7 p.m.
