egional Championship, the No. 1 Alabama men’s golf team will become the latest athletic program to set its eyes on back-to-back national titles. However, coach Jay Seawell said his team hasn’t been focusing on the back-to-back championship potential. In fact, they haven’t really talked about last season’s victory at all. Seawell said they’ve only focused the present, which has given them the extra push the team needs to succeed. Seawell also said he was confident in his team going back into the championship tournament. “Oh yeah, I knew we were good,” Seawell said. “I didn’t know how good or anything like that but I knew we were one of the top two or three teams in the country. The guys are really good players. I didn’t know how they would handle post-winning the championship; that part I am very proud of. They have worked extremely hard and have been forward-thinking and very rarely have they talked about last year in anything other than they were supposed to which was in celebration or things like that. They have been very forward-thinking. That part has been very exciting.” Beginning Friday, Alabama will be competing in the NCAA Championship Tournament in Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kansas. This is the first time the Crimson Tide will compete on the golf course. Seawell said it is a challenging course, marked for its accuracy. He also said the team will be able to handle the course well. “We’re in Kansas so the wind blows on a calm day so it’ll be very windy conditions,” Seawell said. “From what I understand, the greens are very, very complex. There’s a lot of complexity to them. There’s a lot of local knowledge out here. The Mid-west teams and those from around this area will have a bit more knowledge than we do.” Despite going into an unknown course, Alabama’s confidence is apparent. With four returning players who know about the NCAA pressure, Seawell said the entire team was one unit, and was ready to take the course. “I think we are a really deep team,” Seawell said. “Tom (Lovelady), our fifth man, finished third at the regionals. I think it helps a great deal, because it helps with confidence. Each guy has to have confidence in each other. And as you get closer to the final ring, so to speak, the deeper you are and the more comfortable you are with each other, the better your chances are at being successful.” Though Seawell can’t see the future, he expects his team to perform to Alabama standards. “My expectations are that Alabama will hopefully play like Alabama,” Seawell said. “We will just be Alabama. I don’t where that gets us. There’s a lot of good teams but we don’t really think of results. So I don’t have any results in my head of where we need to do [or] what we need to do. We built the team in such a way that we can be very successful if we just stay with what Alabama does. So my expectations are for us to be Alabama and see what that does.”
