Alabama sophomore cornerback Geno Smith will miss the season-opener against Virginia Tech in Atlanta after being arrested for a DUI Sunday, coach Nick Saban announced Tuesday.
“He’s an excellent person, he’s never been in trouble here before, never been in my office for anything,” Saban said. “But this is something everyone should learn from.”
Smith, a four-star prospect coming out of high school, enjoyed a breakout freshman campaign last year and worked his way into a starting role. In fall camp, he had been practicing in the Crimson Tide’s “star” position in its nickel package.
Smith is the fifth Alabama player to be arrested this offseason, after Brent Calloway, Tyler Hayes, Eddie Williams and D.J. Pettaway were involved in a February incident and dismissed from the team.
