Live Grind Love to host party to benefit Literacy Council of West Alabama

Live Grind Love, a clothing line founded by a University of Alabama student, is hosting a party to benefit the Literacy Council of West Alabama Thursday from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. at Mellow Mushroom.

The party will feature live performances from hip hop artists, food and drinks and custom-designed T-shirts by Live Grind Love for the Literacy Council.

“It will be just like going out to a party on the Strip, but we’re just trying to make it be for a good cause,” Carey Fountain, co-founder of Live Grind Love, said.

Fountain, a junior in New College, said Live Grind Love is not just a clothing line but a movement inspired by doing positive things through art and music.

“It started with us wanting to do something that makes a difference in the community in a cool and unique way,” he said. “We wanted to team up with a charity for our next party.”

Fountain said they decided to partner with the Literacy Council of West Alabama after discovering that one in four Alabamians are functionally illiterate.

“After we found that out, it seemed like the right thing to do,” Fountain said. “Being involved in art and music, we believe in the power of words and how everyone has a voice that they should use to express themselves.”

Leslie Leonard, a junior in English, is an intern with the Literacy Council of West Alabama. She said organizations on campus such as READ Alabama and Literacy is the Edge, or LITE, work with children in public schools. Volunteers from the Literacy Council also help adults in the community obtain GEDs.

Leonard said illiteracy is an issue people do not talk about much compared to other social issues. She hopes the event will raise more than just money for the Literacy Council.

“Hopefully this will raise awareness about literacy and the Literacy Council in general,” she said. “Some people don’t even know [it] exists.”

Tickets are $5 at the door and will benefit the Literacy Council of West Alabama.
