Defensive lineman LT Overton, a former 5-star recruit in the class of 2022, is set to begin a new chapter in his football career this season as a member of the Crimson Tide.
Overton said in an interview with 247Sports that his parents having athletic experience at the collegiate level played a large role in his development. His father, Milton Overton, played offensive lineman at Oklahoma, and his mother, Eunice Thomas, was a star volleyball player at Kentucky.
“They’ve gone through a lot, “he said, “It helps me out and helps me grow up right and have a good mindset.”
His older brother, Micaiah Overton, played alongside him at the high school and collegiate levels. Micaiah Overton will spend his final year of collegiate eligibility playing defensive lineman at Arkansas State after leaving Liberty in 2022 and Texas A&M in 2023.
Brotherly competition from time to time has also helped him become the student athlete he is today, he said
“Me and my brother have always battled,” Overton said. “He used to always be able to pump me around. That’s what I always used to build up on. He’s always made me better because of that.”
In 2018, after a few moves between schools, the Overton brothers found their way to Bessemer Academy. Together, they led the Rebels to an Alabama Independent School Association 3A state championship appearance in football and helped win a state championship in basketball.
Tuscaloosa Academy head football coach Josh Wright, who coached football at Bessemer Academy from 2008-2020, said that the Overton brothers pushed each other every day and had mutual respect.
“[LT] respected Micaiah very much, and Micaiah loved him. Even on the basketball court, they made each other better. They always have,” Wright said.
Micaiah Overton graduated and signed with Liberty in 2019 and LT Overton continued to attract the attention of college football scouts in his second season with the Rebels. He finished the season with 105 tackles including 42 for loss, 19 sacks and 13 quarterback hurries while helping win a state championship.
Overton etched his name into the Rebels’ record books while maintaining a high GPA. former Bessemer Academy assistant coach Bob Spurgeon, said Overton was a “phenomenal student as well as an outstanding athlete.”
Shortly after winning the state championship, Overton transferred to Milton High School in Georgia, where he continued to play football at a high level. He played multiple defensive line roles and helped his team reach the Georgia 7A state championship game.
Overton began receiving offers in 2021 from the top colleges in the nation, including Alabama.
When Overton narrowed down his top five potential landing spots, his brother entered the transfer portal so that the two of them could reunite as teammates.
Once Overton finished his junior season at Milton High School, he made the decision to reclassify into the class of 2022 and graduated a year early. Texas A&M offered both brothers a spot on the team, and that is where the duo ended up.
After two seasons with the Aggies, the brothers entered the transfer portal and will follow their respective destinies. Micaiah Overton will be in the defensive line rotation at Arkansas State.
LT Overton transferred to Alabama in the offseason, and he is competing to play a handful of snaps in the bandit position in new defensive coordinator Kane Wommack’s “Swarm” defense.
