LETTERS TO THE EDITOR | President Donald Trump will be delivering a commencement address at The University of Alabama Thursday, May 1 at an optional, ticketed event for graduating students.

The announcement, made on Trump’s Truth Social account and later confirmed by the University, has drawn mixed reactions, with some students excited and honored to hear from the sitting president, and others denouncing the University for hosting a man they see as antithetical to the Capstone’s values.

Hear from three students — two current and one former — who argue in guest columns why the University should not have agreed to host President Trump for a commencement address.

NEWS | President Donald Trump announced Monday that he will give the commencement address at The University of Alabama this year.

“I have agreed to do the Commencement Address at two really GREAT places, the University of Alabama and, WEST POINT,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post. “Stay tuned for times and dates!!!”

The University did not respond to multiple requests to confirm the announcement in time for publication.

UA spring commencement is set to be held May 2-4 across eight ceremonies at Coleman Coliseum. All ceremonies are usually free to attend and open to the public, though it is unclear if that will change if Trump gives the commencement address. Trump did not clarify which ceremonies he will speak at.

The address comes as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement under the Trump administration recently detained UA Iranian doctoral student Alireza Doroudi. The Department of Homeland Security alleged in a statement without providing evidence that Doroudi posed “significant national security concerns.”

NEWS | Alireza Doroudi, the University of Alabama doctoral student detained by U.S Immigration and Customs Enforcement in March, was denied bond at a hearing on Thursday.

“We are deeply disappointed by today’s decision to deny bond by Judge Maithe Gonzalez. The government has provided no evidence in the record that Mr. Doroudi poses any national security threat,” David Rozas, an attorney representing Doroudi, said in an email statement.

In a previous statement, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said that Doroudi posed “significant national security concerns,” but the department declined to provide evidence for or additional information about its claim. The DHS did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday.

According to AL.com, González said Douroudi failed to prove he was not a national security threat as the government alleged, and said that he was a flight risk due to having a revoked visa and having “scarce ties to the community.”

“Mr. Doroudi is not a flight risk. He is a beloved member of the community, as evidenced by the overwhelming outpouring of support from students, faculty, and neighbors in recent weeks,” Rozas said. Doroudi lives with his fiance, Sama Bajgani, in Tuscaloosa, and he was participating in a doctoral program in mechanical engineering at the University.

NEWS | The price of the student football full home

NEWS | The price of the student football full home ticket package increased from $171 to $256 for the 2025 season. This is a nearly 50% increase from last season’s package.

Ella Cameron, a freshman majoring in business management, said she’s buying the package because she’s a “ride or die Alabama football fan.”

Over the last five years, student ticket package prices, including the $6 handling fee, have increased over 95%, from $131 in 2021 to $256 in 2025.

The University athletics department did not respond in time for production to a request for comment on the price increase.

Despite the increase, in a student poll with over 380 respondents, 54% said they planned on purchasing the package. Only 23% of students said they did not intend to purchase the package, with the remaining 23% saying they were unsure what they would do.

From the over 380 respondents, only 40 of them said they thought the price increase was reasonable compared to last year’s package.

"I just love going to games. I’ve been going for years now,” said Milton Hand, a freshman majoring in kinesiology. “My family has season tickets. You go as a student, it’s a different deal. It’s a fun experience. The atmosphere, the tradition of going to games and being part of it all — you can’t miss it.”

Harley Nycz, a freshman majoring in aerospace engineering, said he did not plan to purchase the package but instead would decide attendance on a game-by-game basis, adding that the price increase was “pretty steep for an okay season” last year.

“I’m not a super high-energy person, and I’m co-oping and commuting between Tuscaloosa and Birmingham next semester, so I need to relax some,” he said. “I’ll go to a big game here or there, maybe even a small one, but not all.”

NEWS | Alireza Doroudi, the UA doctoral student de

NEWS | Alireza Doroudi, the UA doctoral student detained by ICE last month, has a new bond hearing scheduled for Thursday at 3 p.m.

Doroudi has been held in the Central Louisiana ICE Processing Center since March 28, after being held at the Pickens County Jail on no charges.

A spokesperson from the Department of Homeland Security previously said Doroudi “posed significant national security concerns,” but declined to elaborate.

According to AL.com, attorneys for DHS told a judge Monday that they are “currently not able to provide evidence showing Alireza Doroudi is a national security concern.”

In a statement to WVTM 13, an attorney representing Doroudi said that immigration Judge Maithe González requested additional information from both parties before making a decision.

“Please note that late last week, most immigration master hearings — including Mr. Doroudi’s — were canceled in favor of individual hearings. A date for Mr. Doroudi’s individual hearing has not yet been confirmed,” the statement read.

NEWS | Alabama’s newest anti-drag bill, House Bi

NEWS | Alabama’s newest anti-drag bill, House Bill 67, was introduced to the State House on Feb. 2, 2025.

The partisan bill is sponsored by Republican Rep. Scott Stadthagen and positions its content as a “parental rights” issue whose major subject deals with children.

The bill seeks to “prohibit public K-12 schools and public libraries from knowingly presenting or sponsoring drag performances in the presence of a minor without the consent of the minor's parent or legal guardian.” It defines drag performances as “a performance in which a performer exhibits a sex identity that is different from the sex assigned to the performer at birth using clothing, makeup, or other physical markers.”

Since 2023, legislators in predominantly conservative states have pushed for laws limiting or prohibiting drag performances based on the belief that drag itself is excessively sexual and too inappropriate to be viewed by minors.

Both Tennessee and Montana have passed anti-drag laws restricting performances, and Alabama has previously introduced legislation meant to target the art form.

Tuscaloosa is home to a small but strong drag community, largely the result of local LGBTQ+ bar Icon and city-wide celebrations like the Miss Druid City Pride Pageant.

Olivia Giselle, who considers herself to be a “showgirl” who “does the art of drag” rather than a drag queen, began performing in drag in Tuscaloosa in 2018 as an outlet to deal with depression, anxiety and gender dysphoria.

“It was very important for me to find a safe outlet, a healthy outlet, to find myself again,” Giselle said.

When considering anti-drag legislation and those who support it, Giselle said she believes that the opposition comes from a place of hatred and misunderstanding.

“I think people should just allow people to be people,” Giselle said. “If it’s not harming anybody, if it’s not getting in anyone’s way — I think the obsession of it is the fact that they see people genuinely being happy and want to cause pain or sorrow.”

NEWS | Hundreds of UA students, faculty and Tuscal

NEWS | Hundreds of UA students, faculty and Tuscaloosa residents rallied in front of the Richard Shelby Federal Building and Courthouse Saturday in protest of what they see as government overreach and anti-democratic practices under President Donald Trump and Elon Musk.

Members of the progressive activist organization Indivisible, along with local organizations, planned “Hands Off! Tuscaloosa” in concordance with over 1,300 protests across all 50 states. The protest also comes less than a week after Tuscaloosans protested the detaining of UA doctoral student Alireza Doroudi at the same location.

Heather Love, an organizer for Indivisible and assistant professor in the University’s Department of Human Development and Family Studies, said that the protest wasn’t a response to any one recent event, but rather a community standing up for the rights of each other.

“Alabama is not a lost cause state,” she said. “We do care about these issues, we are willing to stand up for our rights, and we do have people that will come together when we need to.”

Love said that she hadn’t been involved in protest movements until recently but was called to action by the lack of response from her local representatives.

“This is a starting point to show the administration that the American public is not happy with how things are going,” she said. “We will stand up and fight against what’s happening when we have to, and we’ll continue as long as we have to.”

The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees appointed Sid J. Trant as chancellor of the UA System Friday. Trant has served as interim chancellor for the past 10 months, after the retirement of former chancellor Finis St. John.
