In an evening of free food, prizes, scholarships totaling over $500 and nationwide hurricane relief, the Alabama Student Association for Poetry will host the ASAP Halloween Talent Show and Poetry Slam this evening.
Student organizations across campus will showcase their talents while simultaneously competing to raise funds for hurricane relief alongside audience donation.
The event will take place at 8 p.m. in the Ferguson Center. Attendees are encouraged to wear their craziest costumes in support of the event and Halloween festivities. Attendees are also encouraged to bring spare change, food and supplies for hurricane relief as the event will accept monetary and physical donations in wake of a devastating hurricane season.
In heat of the competition, the top and final ten poetry submissions will compete for three grand prizes, $100 alone for third place, $200 for second and $300 for first.
The 2017 Atlantic hurricane season has dawned hyperactive, noting the highest total accumulated cyclone energy (ACE) and highest number of major hurricanes since 2005. The season has not only reaped an estimated $188 billion in damages, but marked the only season to date in which three hurricanes each had an ACE over 40 among hurricanes Irma, Jose and Maria.
Though much public attention to the hurricanes has faded, many communities are still in need of basic supplies and recovery. The Alabama Student Association for Poetry hopes this event may foster just one small contribution any motivated group and individual can make throughout and beyond campus in the continuous effort to alleviate the pain and destruction of the recent hurricanes.
