Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts had plenty of room to carry the football a yard for his second rushing score of the day. Instead, he threw the ball to his fullback-linebacker Mack Wilson.
Wilson bobbled the catch, but managed to secure the ball before he hit the ground in the end zone. The touchdown was the first of Wilson’s career, and marked the sixth and final time the Crimson Tide found the end zone in Alabama’s 48-0 victory over Kent State.
“[Mack Wilson] made a nice catch, and I’m happy that he was able to score a touchdown,” Alabama coach Nick Saban said. “I’m also happy that he was able to play a signifigant amount on defense as well.”
Hurts was pulled early in the second quarter with a 24-point lead, and didn’t attempt another pass in the first half. He saw limited action in the second half and finished 16-of-24 for 164 passing yards and a touchdown. He also carried the ball seven times for an additional 54 yards and a rushing score.
Alabama’s defense gave up a 47-yard run on Kent State’s first offensive play, but the Crimson Tide contained the Golden Flashes after that, allowing only 119 additional yards as time expired.
The special teams unit found the end zone late in the second half when wide receiver Xavian Marks returned a punt 75 yards. The Crimson Tide has now scored six non-offensive touchdowns this season and has scored at least one in Alabama’s last six games dating back to the 38-0 victory over then No. 4 Michigan State in the College Football Playoff.
Marks’ sucess could provide Alabama with another special teams weapon, but his coach was quick to point out the mistakes the sophmore made when he failed to return a pair of punts.
“He’s a very explosive guy,” Saban said. “He’s got to make good judgements and good choices and decisions becuase possession of the ball is the most important thing. I thought he did a good job except for getting a couple balls fielded.”
