The University of Alabama will be hosting the Alabama Literacy Summit as a part of the Regional Education Laboratory Southeastern Literacy Event tomorrow. 

The National Center for The Literacy Council of West Alabama estimates that one in four Alabamians is illiterate. There are more than 92,000 illiterate adults in central Alabama alone, according to the same source.

WHO: The event is hosted by The University of Alabama and is open to the public. The other southeastern states involved are Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina and South Carolina.

WHAT: The Belser-Parton Literacy Center is a university research center from the College of Education. This year, they will be hosting the annual literacy summit. There will be speakers and a keynote address at the event.


WHEN: The summit is being held Thursday, April 20 from 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

WHERE: It will be at the Bryant Conference Center, which is located at 240 Paul W. Bryant Drive in Tuscaloosa. 





WHY: “The Belser-Parton Literacy Center exists to serve local, state and national community with the central focus on children and how their literacy needs can best be served through excellent teaching and meaningful research,” their website states.

The Center partners with the UA College of Education multiple times a year to put on events such as this one to promote the importance of literacy. Their area of focus is on community outreach, teacher education and research and scholarship.
