GLENDALE, Ariz. — Alabama won the CFP Championship by a score of 45-40 on Jan. 11, 2016 in front of a crowd of 75,765.
Derrick Henry struck first with a 50-yard score. It was his 20th consecutive game with a rushing touchdown.
Clemson scored 14 unanswered points with Deshaun Watson connecting with Hunter Renfrow twice for 31- and 11-yard touchdowns.
Eddie Jackson came up with a big interception in the second quarter which led to another Henry touchdown, this time from a yard back with help from defensive linemen Jarran Reed and A’Shawn Robinson.
D.J. Pettway was credited with a field goal block at the end of the second half, as Clemson looked to take a lead.
Jake Coker hit O.J. Howard for a 53-yard touchdown in the third quarter. It was Howard’s first since 2013.
Clemson answered with a 37-yard field goal. The Tigers added a touchdown with under five minutes in the third quarter to retake the lead, 24-21.
They carried the lead into the fourth quarter. Alabama tied it up with 10:34 left to play on a 33-yard field goal by Adam Griffith.
Griffith surprise nearly everyone with an onside kick that Marlon Humphrey recovered. Two plays later, Coker connected with Howard again, this time 51 yards, and Alabama took a 31-24 lead.
The Tigers pulled within four with a 31-yard field goal with 7:47 left. On the ensuing kickoff, Kenyan Drake took it 95 yards for the score to put the Crimson Tide up 38-27.
