The University of Alabama System board of trustees approved the employment contracts of several coaches and executives throughout the UA System at its Tuesday meeting.
“We try to make sure we’re competitive in the marketplace, and at the same time, we have the fiduciary responsibility that we have to manage the resources of our department,” said Greg Byrne, director of UA Athletics.
Kristy Curry, George Husack, Ashley Johnston, Glenn Putyrae and Dan Waters — the head coaches of women’s basketball, men’s tennis, gymnastics, rowing, and track and field, respectively — each had their contracts approved.
The coaches received the following updates to their contracts:
- Curry: Five-year contract extension through June 30, 2029, with a $650,000 annual salary
- Husack: Two-year contract extension through June 30, 2026, with a $150,000 annual salary
- Johnston: Five-year contract extension through June 30, 2029, with $225,000 annual salary
- Putyrae: Two-year contract extension through June 30, 2026, with a $180,000 annual salary
- Waters: Four-year contract extension through June 30, 2028, with a $300,000 annual salary
The board also approved a compensation package for Dan Layzell, the newly-appointed vice president of financial affairs and treasurer for the University.
“Dr. Layzell’s compensation bears a proper and reasonable relationship to administrators within the field of higher education,” UA President Stuart Bell said. “Additionally, it is consistent with the experience and expertise that he brings both to the financial and operational aspects of this position.”
The board also approved Mick Hedgepeth as head men’s basketball coach at the University of Alabama at Huntsville and employment contracts for Jason Jackson, associate head coach of UA baseball, and Courtney Morgan, Alabama football’s general manager.
