Alabama senior gymnast Kayla Hoffman has been named one of four finalists for the 2011 Honda Award, which is given annually to the nation’s top gymnast.
Hoffman, a five-time All-American, led the Crimson Tide to its fifth NCAA Championship Saturday, clinching the win with a 9.95 on the floor exercise.
She also finished second in the nation in the all-around and the balance beam at the championships this past weekend. Earlier this year, she was named the Southeaster Conference Gymnast of the Year and SEC Gymnastics Scholar of the Year, the first gymnast to win both awards in the same season.
The other finalists include Michigan’s Kylee Botterman (the NCAA All-Around Champion), UCLA’s Brittani McCullough and Penn State’s Sharaya Musser. The winner of the Honda Award for gymnastics becomes a candidate for The Honda-Broderick Cup, awarded annually to the collegiate woman athlete of the year. Because she is a finalist in the competition, American Honda will donate $1,000 to Alabama in Hoffman’s name.
