Women’s basketball records first road win over Georgia since 1997

For the first time since 1997, Alabama women’s basketball defeated Georgia in Athens 58-53. Alabama improves to 11-10 (3-5 SEC) snapping a 12-game road losing streak to the Lady Bulldogs, while Georgia falls to 13-8 (3-4 SEC).
“It was a really gutsy win today in a tough environment,” said head coach Kristy Curry in a press release. “I’m really proud of our kids today, their character was amazing. Today was a great confidence-builder for our team.”
The Crimson Tide was led by junior Cierra Johnson scoring 18 points, recording career highs in rebounds (8) and steals (7). Freshman De’Sha Benjamin recorded 11 points and six rebounds. Sophomore Jasmine Walker had nine points.
Alabama and Georgia exchanged baskets in the first quarter with Georgia having a 12-9 advantage after 10 minutes. The Crimson Tide hit six of its first seven shots in the second quarter to led by nine at halftime, 30-21.
Johnson scored eight points in the third quarter to give Alabama the 44-35 lead heading into the final quarter.
Georgia answered with a 10-0 run to cut Alabama’s led to two, 55-53 and then went on another 6-0 run with 45 seconds remaining. Georgia missed a three-pointer, and the Crimson Tide made two free-throws to secure the win.
Alabama shot 24-of-57 for 42 percent never trailing in the second half, while the Lady Bulldogs shot 18-of-62 for 29 percent from the field. Alabama outrebounded Georgia 43-39 and caused 18 turnovers. The Crimson Tide shot 6-of-10 for 60 percent from the foul line.
Alabama returns to action Sunday, Feb. 3 against No. 7 Mississippi State. Tipoff is slated for 12 p.m.
