What: Private screening of A Wrinkle in Time

Why: Celebrate Women’s History Month and support film

To celebrate Women’s History Month, the College of Communication and Information Sciences (C&IS) will host a private screening of the adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s 1962 novel, A Wrinkle in Time, for students who RSVP’d earlier this month. Directed by Ava Duvernay, this film made headlines for being the first film with a $100 million budget directed by a woman of color. Rachel Raimist, associate professor and co-director of the Journalism and Creative Media Department said it is important to celebrate a film with diverse casting and crew members.

“It is significant and should be celebrated that Ava is the first black woman to be given a $100M budget to make a studio film,” Raimist said. “For all of her productions, including Wrinkle, she hires a very inclusive crew so there are diverse people working behind and in front of the camera. She’s leading change in an industry being investigated by ACLU because women directors and directors of color are not hired often.”

The March 20 screening at Cobb Theatres will be followed by a discussion panel featuring Raimist, as well as professors Robin Boylorn and Marquette Jones who will discuss the significance of this film in regards to growing diversity in the film industry.
