Retired Broadway entertainers and the power of Shakespeare collide to create the award-winning documentary, “Still Dreaming.” Both the documentary and its director, Hank Rogerson, will make an appearance at Bama Theatre tonight, Friday, Feb. 23.

“Still Dreaming” follows a group of retired entertainers and the rehearsals for their production of Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” 

Rogerson has worked as a director, writer, producer, and actor on a number of films. He has directed two documentaries, “Homeland” and “Shakespeare Behind Bars,” which is a film depicting the year-long rehearsal process of prisoners staging “The Tempest” at a prison in Kentucky. 

Rogerson is set to give a speech before the screening of his film at 6 p.m. about the process of making “Still Dreaming.” The film will show at 7:30 p.m. and there will be a Q&A session afterwards. 

“Still Dreaming” is the third film in the Shakespeare Film Series. The Series is sponsored by the Hudson Strode Program in Renaissance Studies in the English Department at the University of Alabama. 

“For me, the one thing I want people to take from the film is the understanding that Shakespeare is not meant to be exclusive property of English and theatre majors,” said Dr. Marvin Sasser, organizer of the Shakespeare Film Series. “When I teach Shakespeare in a 200-level class, I emphasize that Shakespeare’s theatre was next door to taverns, bear baiting, which is gamblings on fights between bears and dogs, and brothels. The same people that would go to bear baiting, taverns and brothels would go to ‘Hamlet.'”

The fourth and final film in the Shakespeare Film Series is “The Merchant of Venice” and it will be shown on Monday, April 9.
