Well-known Cuban news anchor and political commentator Cristina Escobar will give a lecture to the University on Wednesday afternoon about Cuba’s current journalism condition and its progression due to the country’s growing relationship with the United States.
Escobar, a Havana University graduate, plays a large role in Cuban Press as she is now a prominent international affairs reporter and news anchor for TV Cubana, a Cuban state-run television network. Escobar is a popular national television face covering Latin-American relations and publicly discussing the changes in Cuba and its relationship with the United States on CCTV America. She also was the anchor during President Obama’s visit to Cuba this year.

The lecture is part of the University’s ongoing Cuba Week. Escobar is covering the U.S. presidential election for Cuban television in her visit to the United States, and her lecture at the University is part of her trip. She has experience speaking with both the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and International Congress of Latin American Studies on the topic of Cuba’s economic and political state.
“Escobar is essentially the Katie Couric of Cuba,” said Robert Olin, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences in a UA press release.
