Five people were slain in their sleep in Citronelle, Alabama, on Saturday. The suspect, Derrick Dearman, turned himself in and will be charged with six counts of capital murder.
The victims are Robert Lee Brown, 26; Shannon Melissa Randall, 35; Chelsea Marie Reed, 22; Justin Kaleb Reed, 23; Joseph Adam Turner, 26.
Chelsea Reed was five months pregnant at the time of her death.
Police believe the killing stemmed from a domestic dispute. Citronelle PD says that Dearman’s girlfriend, Laneta Lester, said he was abusive and went to a relative’s house on Friday to escape Dearman. At around 1 a.m. on Saturday, Dearman went to that home, but allegedly left soon after as police were called, they did not find him.
It is unclear why police officers couldn’t find Dearman, though the area is heavily wooded.
They believe Dearman returned sometime between 1:15 a.m. and sunrise, killing the victims with multiple weapons as they slept.
Authorities say Dearman forcefully drove Lester and a three-month-old infant to his father’s home in Mississippi where he released the two. They also say Dearman was wanted on an outstanding warrant for burglary, which was just one piece of his criminal record in Mississippi.
According to police, a large amount of evidence against Dearman was found at the crime scene. It is likely that by next week he will be extradited to Mobile County.
