Six people were killed in a plane crash that occurred sometime after 11:10 a.m. on Sunday near the Tuscaloosa Regional Airport.
Details were released in a joint press conference with Northport Mayor Bobby Herndon and Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox, held at 1:45 p.m. Both of the mayors confirmed that there were no survivors. Herndon said the Tuscaloosa Fire and Rescue crews stationed at the airport informed him that the plane did not even make the runway.
First responders were unable to save the victims when they arrived three minutes after the crash at Van de Graaff Park, located just south of Robert Cardinal Airport Road.
“There will be families hurting greatly because of this. The worst thing we can do is put out information that’s not correct or not accurate,” Maddox said. “The hesitation that we have in all of this is that we’re only two hours into this matter. There’s a lot of details that haven’t surfaced.”
Federal Aviation Administration officials from Birmingham will be conducting a thorough investigation into the crash. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
