The Alabama Judicial Inquiry Commission said it wants Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore removed from office in a court filing on Friday.

Moore came under fire after he allegedly refused to acknowledge last year’s Supreme Court ruling that acknowledged same-sex couples have the right to marry and urged probate judges to defy the ruling.

Moore isn’t a novice when it comes to being removed from office. He was removed from the bench in 2003 after he refused to take down a monument of the Ten Commandments in the Alabama Judicial Building. The commission said Moore disrespected the judiciary by continuing to enforce the state’s ban on gay marriage.

The Moore controversy is only one of the three ethics scandals surrounding Alabama state officials this year. Governor Robert Bentley is being looked at by an impeachment committee, and House Speaker Mike Hubbard was recently removed from office and sentenced to prison after being convicted on corruption charges.

Moore has denied ordering probate judges not to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples and does not think there are grounds to remove him.
