The 2016 SEC Media Days are halfway over, and a lot has been discussed to this point.
Here’s the highlights:
Commissioner Greg Sankey took time to recognize the debt the SEC owes to Pat Summitt and the problems facing the country in the last week. As his speech unfolded, Sankey attempted to sum up what makes the SEC special and introduced the conference’s new It Just Means More campaign slogan.
Auburn coach Gus Malzahn acknowledged that last season was a frustrating and humbling experience for him. If the team wants to be respected as a national contender again, then it will likely need to “earn it” and prove it can win close games against quality opponents early in the season.
Florida’s season didn’t end the way coach Jim McElwain wanted it to, but he looks forward to potentially rematching Alabama, and the coach who taught him so much, in Atlanta for the 2016 SEC Championship Game.
Derek Mason knows he hasn’t taken the conference by storm yet, but he set aside time on his wife’s birthday to discuss his decision to serve as the defensive play-caller and how the Vanderbilt Commodores are going to take the next step in his third year in Nashville, Tennessee.
Georgia head coach Kirby Smart might be new to SEC Media Days, but he’s not new to the conference and he knows how to win in the SEC- with big lineman and a strong running game.
The Crimson Tide won’t enter the building till Wednesday, but coaches and players had plenty to say about the defending national champs in the morning session of day two.
Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen and his players discuss the ongoing quarterback battle and new defensive coordinator Peter Simon.
Coach Butch Jones and Tennessee might have the program’s best shot in a long time to return to the SEC Championship game, but the Volunteers will have to manage high expectations from within and without.
Texas A&M needs more consistency in 2016. Coach Kevin Sumlin thinks quarterback Trevor Knight and defensive end Myles Garrett might be the solution for the Aggies.
