In the wake of the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando, Florida on June 12 that killed 49 people and injured 53, Tuscaloosa city official Matt Calderon is looking change a policy that prevents off-duty police officers from working security inside establishments that serve alcohol.
According to the Tuscaloosa News, TPD officers are permitted to work security or other services while in uniform under certain circumstances. However, city policy prevents them from doing so for alcoholic beverage licensees. The policy dates back to 2004 and was rooted in liability issues and police officer exhaustion concerns.
With rising safety concerns for large, public social gatherings many venues are requesting to use cops in order to make patrons feel safer, and deter any possible threats.
