The Crimson White

A Brooklyn girl with a southern charm

Alabama? And you’re from where? Why did you choose Alabama out of all places? Once people found out I was from New York, they were instantly fascinated by my decision to attend the Capstone. During my four years at the University, I was constantly asked why a girl from Brooklyn would leave the city to attend school in Alabama. My answer was simple: it is a great school, so why not? As cliché as it sounds, I was right. The University of Alabama is the top of its class whether it is in sports, academics or its strong reputation as one of the best.

From the moment I took my first campus tour my senior year of high school, I knew that my search for the perfect college was over. I remember how green the grass was and how clean the air felt against my face as I strolled down the quad. It was in this moment that my parents and I knew this school was a perfect fit for me. I admit my journey here was not all rainbows and butterflies, I had my share of obstacles, but it molded me. It molded me into a driven, independent and fearless woman.

Being a city girl all my life, the South was a huge culture shock for me, and to be honest, it was difficult. I was out of my comfort zone, but it felt refreshing. I knew that I was sacrificing the comfort of my home, family and friends to pursue my dream of going away for school. Despite all of the lonely, stressful nights I’ve encountered here, this moment right here right now is what I have been waiting for. To walk across that stage in front of my loved ones and showcase to the world I did it!

My time here at the University has been life-changing. I witnessed the second African-American SGA president elected into office, a plethora of diversity movements and not one but two football national championships. I’ve gone through homesickness, deaths and most of all heartbreaks just like any other college girl. But I rise today to tell all of my fellow students that this college journey is the best thing you could have ever done. In this stage of your life, it’s all about you, and that’s okay.

To my fellow May graduates, we did it! Let’s enjoy our last few weeks as college kids and prepare for the next chapter in our lives.

To my parents, you guys are a blessing. Thank you for helping me fulfill me dreams, believing in me and supporting me in all I do. Without your guidance and love I don’t think I could have gotten through these four years with my sanity.

To UA students, enjoy your time here because it flies by. I know you probably heard it millions of times before, but planning for the future now helps alleviate the stress later. Study, party, relax and do what you want to do because tomorrow it never guaranteed. These are the best years of your lives, so make the best out of every experience.

I write this column today as the last page in my college chapter. I write this column with inner peace and a sense of achievement. I am honored to share my thoughts with you all and hope it inspires someone out there. So thank you UA for all you have done for me. Thank you for teaching me independence, responsibility, drive and school pride. Most importantly, thank you for raising me. Farewell!
