It is good to have friends, but to have a best friend is even better. Sometimes people are lucky to have the same best friend their entire life. Others find theirs much later. Most of the time, they seem to be the only people on earth who completely understand you. If you are lucky enough to have that person, here are some things that only best friends get.
10: The look
Oh, the sacred “look.” It is facial expression between the two of you that only you and your best friend can understand. It is the look that you give each other when you see something out of the ordinary, run into a person you both do not like or even just when you both notice something in a conversation.
9: Special language
Best friends also make up their own language and code to speak to each other in. These are those random noises or code names that only the two of you understand. You often use your special language around other people because 9 times out of 10, they are the ones you’re trying to talk about.
8: Late night food runs
“Hey, let’s go get something to eat.”
“It is one in the morning.”
“So, what is your point?”
“Alright, let’s go.”
It does not matter how late it gets, somehow you and your best friend are always making a food run. The fact that you have an 8 a.m. the next morning or that it might be finals week does not mean anything when that call or text comes through. All that matters is when they call, you answer. Now, what to get from Waffle House?
7: You’re more like siblings
You know their family. They know yours. From grandma, all the way down to that distant cousin and in between, you know every member of each other’s family and you’re practically a member too. You both spend a substantial amount of time at each other’s houses and sometimes you are there even when they are not. Their parents are like your second set of parents and they treat you like one of their own. Your best friend is really like your brother or sister, too.
6: When they drag you with them to go out
It has been a long week of classes and maybe you decide to take this Friday night to stay home and just chill. Unfortunately for you, your best friend is not having it. Everyone has been there before: just wanting to relax but instead being dragged out of the house by a friend. You reluctantly go, because, duh, that is your BFF, but on the inside you really just might want to punch them in the face for forcing you out of the safe oasis that is your bed.
5: That feeling you get knowing they care
When they check on you when you are sick. When they are a shoulder to cry on in a tragic situation. Or when they stick up for you to other people. It is a great feeling to know that your best friend has your back and that they truly care about you. You know whenever you are down and out, they are just one phone call away.
4: Being in different orgs on campus
With so many different organizations on campus, it is possible that you and your best friend may not be in the same one. That is ok. They may have chosen one sorority or fraternity and you may have chosen the other, but that does not mean that you can no longer be friends. Sure, you might have silly arguments about whose organization is better, but at least you know that this will never threaten your relationship.
3: Being down for their crazy schemes
Sometimes, the craziest stuff comes out of your best friend’s mouth and it might leave you thinking, ‘why are we even friends,’ but you are always down for the cause. They might think it is a good idea to go swimming at 2 a.m. and you do not, but nevertheless, you are right there with them. You are down for their schemes just like they are down for yours. You know, like stalking your crush on social media.
2: Cram study sessions
It could be midterms, finals or a normal week when you have what feels like a trillion tests and quizzes, but you have your best friend right there with you. Whether you are helping them study or they are helping you, it is a good feeling to have them there with you staying up late cramming. It is also a pretty good feeling when you both pass and realize you get to be together yet another semester.
1: Knowing no matter what, they will always be your best friend
Maybe you and your best friend’s college years are coming to an end or they are just beginning, but no matter what, you know that they will always be your best friend. You could be going to schools on opposite ends of the country or you could have gotten that dream job in another state so you won’t see each other as much anymore but no amount of miles can change your friendship. Always remember that no matter how far you go, or how old you both get, or what happens in life, you will be friends.
