If Helen of Troy’s face launched a thousand ships, then Britney Spears’ face launched a million—13.3 million to be exact. Tuesday night’s Glee episode paid tribute to our generation’s most venerated entertainer, the one and only, Britney Spears!
The cleverly titled episode, “Britney/Brittany,” has been the most hyped Glee episode since its Madonna tribute. In fact, shortly after the airing of “The Power of Madonna,” Twitter was ablaze with fans wanting a similar Britney tribute. After teasing from Britney and her manager, Glee creator, Ryan Murphy, confirmed the episode dedicated to the Princess of Pop. The rest is history!
After experiencing a humdrum of an existence, the Glee kids including Brittany, Rachel, and Artie start having vivid Britney fantasies. Whether through dancing with a snake or high-fiving Spears, they find the self-confidence that’s been lacking in their lives. Mr. Shue didn’t appreciate it, and Sue grew cautious of it! The kids, however, found inspiration in it.
Heather Morris, who plays Brittany S. Pearce (say it fast), delivered Britney hit after hit singing and dancing to the most iconic pop songs ever. If there were any doubts that Morris was Beyoncè’s backup dancer or could carry a tune, she shattered those qualms.
The songs of the night focused on Spears’ early discography including her debut single, “…Baby One More Time,” 2001 hit “Stronger,” infamous “I’m a Slave 4 U,” Madonna duet “Me Against the Music,” and Grammy award-winning “Toxic.” Also included in the episode was Paramore’s “The Only Exception.”
Less than 24 hours after airing, Glee dominated the trending topics on Twitter and music charts on iTunes. Rumors of a second Britney Spears tribute episode have already made their rounds on gossip blogs.
What are your thoughts? Did Glee do Britney justice? Do you want another Spears episode?
