In one swing, No. 7 Alabama softball’s season changed.
Freshman right-hander Alexis Osorio (12-5) took a line drive below the ribs in the top of the second and was taken to the hospital as a precaution. There was no update on her injury after the game.
“Just full count, and I’m sure she didn’t want to walk her and she threw a pitch probably too good, and that kid’s [UAB’s Amy Dennis] hit us in the past,” Alabama coach Patrick Murphy said.
Sophomore right-hander Sydney Littlejohn (14-1) came in with one on in the second inning. She pitched four innings and earned the W in Alabama’s 14-1 mercy-rule win over UAB.
Littlejohn walked one and gave up a run, unearned following two errors on the same play. She struck out three.
The Crimson Tide put up 13 runs in the first two innings. In the first inning, the team batted around once and played seven. Freshman catcher Carrigan Fain hit a two-run home run off the left-field foul pole. She followed that at-bat up with an RBI double in the bottom of the second. She went 2-for-3 on the night.
“It felt so good,” Fain said. “I actually hit a grand slam last week, and then this week coming off, I was still on a high so I think it kind of helped me stay calm on the plate and just trust my mechanics.”
Sophomore infielder Marisa Runyon went 3-for-3 with two doubles and a single. She had five RBI.
“I think mentally I’m very confident,” Runyon said. “And it’s like I have a get-to mentality instead of I have to, and I don’t have to get the job done; I can get the job done.”
The Crimson Tide had 13 hits and left five on base. UAB had two hits and left three on base. Alabama (32-9) hosts NC State (25-16) on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
