Inside of a school-bus-turned-tour-bus, the psychedelic rock band SpaceFace is setting off for a stint on the road, playing in most of the major cities in the Southeast.

Unlike many psych-rock bands, SpaceFace creates a DIY light show complete with LED Rope lights, hundreds of multi-colored bulbs, lasers and disco balls at every concert. The band combines this light show with music that mixes elements of pop and psychedelia, describing their live show as “taking acid at a house party with your friend that listens to a whole bunch of records.”

“You want to make a show worth the audience’s while,” Jake Ingalls, singer and guitarist of SpaceFace, said. “We want them to be like, ‘Oh my god, they played like, three months ago, and it was awesome. They had all this cool stuff going on and the sound was like nothing I’d heard in town before. I have to go see them.’”

SpaceFace has been making music since 2012 and released two EPs. Last week, the band released a live EP that was recorded at Ardent Studios. The band said they have plans to release a full length album in the near future. The album will contain songs the band has written recently along with cuts from their Live at Ardent EP.

“This past August we got to go into Ardent studio and record our EP,” Ingalls said. “But after that we had a couple of hours left, so we decided to record our songs live and film it.”

The band, hailing from Memphis, Tennessee, is not only touring under their latest live EP. They are touring to help save their school-bus-turned-tour-bus, Shawty. The band started an Indiegogo campaign to help fund expenses and repairs to the bus.

“We’ve had to cancel shows in Muscle Shoals and Athens before, because it broke down unexpectedly and we really didn’t have the money to fix it,” Ingalls said.

When not fronting SpaceFace, Ingalls is a member of the seminal psychedelic rock band The Flaming Lips. He has been touring with The Flaming Lips since 2013 and is going to start rehearsing with The Flaming Lips after the Southeast leg of this tour. 

Ingalls said balancing playing in both of these bands is not unlike balancing a regular job and playing in a band.

“Instead of scheduling on a day-by-day basis, I schedule on a block of two weeks,” he said. “None of the guys in the band give me any hassle for having to leave for Lips stuff, and all of the Lips guys are incredibly supportive.”

SpaceFace will be opening for The Flaming Lips when the band comes through Mobile and Birmingham. The band has been featured on all three of The Flaming Lips cover albums.

“It’s almost like resume building,” said bassist Matt Strong. “Kind of like when you play South By Southwest. It’s like, ‘Look! We played on this record with all of these people! I know you can’t really tell that it’s us. But we’re there.’”

“It also doesn’t hurt to be mentioned in the same breath as Phantogram and Dr. Dog,” Ingalls said.

SpaceFace will be headlining GreenBar with Young Buffalo on Friday at 11 p.m. There is no cover.
